Tips For Explaining Toto Asia To Your Mom

The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Toto considered North America as a growth market for Washlet bidets and toilets, in contrast to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words so that the next generation could understand the words. However, many of the words were being replaced by foreign ones, like dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Established in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company produced products to meet the demand for new, modern urban housing. It used the first tunnel kilns in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding outwards to take advantage of sales and new markets. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products of manufacturers to complement its own line of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy boosted sales and expanded the firm's market share.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis to research and development of water-related household appliances. It also improved its system of distribution to better serve customers and increase profit. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to supply chain management and used the same methodology for its sales process. This led to a higher level of satisfaction with the customer.

Toto continues to invent toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for example, has a powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally friendly than traditional toilets. The company uses recycled water in its manufacturing process, and also has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers with greater energy efficiency than standard models.

The company's first museum opened in 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's most iconic products and their evolution as well as its group companies (all related to ceramics), historical background of plumbing and products like bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also has bathrooms with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.

Before forming Toto the members of the group did session work for many musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia you'd think that the group would be prog queens and kings but they're actually a fairly straightforward rock band. The band began as four-piece, and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. However, even though the group have a diverse musical background their biggest hit was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster but not without its issues. The record companies placed the band under pressure to release an album that was a success or else they would pull them. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experiences in the music industry, as the band members had been session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for  pop music from the 1980s, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into you. The album also features jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and distorted AOR that could appear completely unnatural, but actually is very effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the group had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the traditional sextet style and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater proficiency on the drums, as well as a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later and then embarked on a tour around the world to help promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album without one single track titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
